Mitsubishi Heavy seeks NRC approval for reactor designs as it moves into the American market. Having lost out to Toshiba in bidding for Westinghouse, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) is now setting up its own subsidiary to be called “MHI Nuclear Energy Systems” in Washington, D.C.
The nuclear business in the United States has been heating up over the last few years, and MHI wants its 1,700 MW class US-APWR design to be certified by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). This technology was originally developed for use at Tsuruga Power Station Units 3 and 4. These light-water reactors will reach a thermal efficiency of 39%.
The new company will have twelve employees, and the president will be Hiroshi Inoue. Business operations are expected to commence this month.
